According to the Annual Report of Waste Management statistics in Egypt, issued 2013, Egypt has generated a total of 89.03 million tons of Solid waste, the majority of which were municipal solid waste calculated at 21 million tons.
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is basically waste collected by municipalities, covering residential, commercial, street sweepings, contents of litter containers, and market cleansing. In 2012, Egypt generated about 57,020 tons/day of MSW, with Cairo coming 1st by generating 15000 tons/Day. At the same time, the waste collection coverage and waste transfer were not adequate enough to contain the issues, with coverage varying from 70% in Urban cities like Cairo to 40% in rural areas such as Monofiya.
