The second Egyptian Solid Waste Management Forum was held in Cairo on the 24th and 25th November 2014.
The format followed that of the first forum held in 2013, which had then proved highly successful to which
participants were very receptive.
For 2014, the theme was ‘Emerging Opportunities from Egypt’s SWM sector’. The 2014 Forum marked the launch
of Egypt’s first Strategic Directives for Waste Management, the implementation of which will lead to a range of
employment, social and commercial opportunities which were explored and discussed over the two days.
Over 200 participants attended the Forum drawn from key stakeholder groups across the country’s waste
sector who participated in workshops covering the following themes:
Business opportunities
Social opportunity
Economic opportunities
Environmental opportunities
Finance and funding
Developing new markets
Energy from waste
Controls and legislation
Pricing controls
Public participation and social inclusion
Waste monitoring – quality and quantity
Manpower and employment opportunities
New for 2014 was the inclusion of a number of international speakers, bringing examples of best practice and
achievements relevant to Egypt to participants.
The success of the first forum held in 2013 was replicated again in 2014 with lively and pro-active debate and
discussions being held across both days leading to the identification and agreement on pathways forward
across many important issues, the details of which are contained within this report. The event also yielded
some surprises. For example, in 2013, the most over-subscribed workshop topics surrounded the issues of
funding and finance. It was believed that the same level of interest would exist for 2014 and to accommodate
this, additional workshop sessions were made available to cover these themes. In fact, demand for these in 2014
was significantly less with very high levels of interest focused upon Energy from Waste.
